8 Health Foods You Should Always Avoid

OK, there is WAY TOO MUCH information out there that leads people to the wrong kind of eating. 

Unfortunately for the LONGEST time, I did not know what to eat. I believed that by having a turkey sandwich, (you’ll see in my description about bread) every day I was giving my body a lot of essential nutrients I needed.

I was very wrongEverything I’ve listed below isn’t necessarily food, but people tend to confuse these with actual HEALTH foods/drinks.Here is a list of 8 health foods you should avoid at ALL COSTS!!


Fruit Juice

Do not confuse the health benefits of fruit vs fruit juices. While fruits provide MANY vitamins and beneficial nutrients, the same does NOT apply to fruit juices.

They both contain high levels of sugar.


However, fruit juice not only has fructose but added refined sugar, as well.

Fruit only contains fructose (natural sugar found in all fruits).

Even if the juice didn’t have the added sugars (which it does), fruit juices contain absolutely NO fiber!

Why is this a problem?

Well, fiber helps slow the rate of sugar entering the bloodstream. Without the fiber, you risk having spikes in your blood sugar levels.

This becomes dangerous because long exposure to high blood sugar levels may cause diabetes.

Also, fiber helps make you feel full longer.

Bottom line, stay away from the juice. Eat your fruits whole.


Soy milk, edamame,  or anything soy related should be eliminated from your diet immediately.

For men, you risk increasing your estrogen levels.

I don’t know about the rest of you guys out there, but I’ve worked very hard to keep my muscle and natural testosterone levels in place. NO THANKS!

For the ladies, you increase your chances of getting breast cancer. If that’s not enough, soy has been linked to:

  • Asthma
  • cystic fibrosis
  • endometrial cancer
  • hypothyroidism 
  • kidney disease
  • urinary bladder cancer

So if you tend to consume a lot of soy such as soy milk, try replacing it with organic sugar-free almond milk.

Vegetable Oils

Vegetables are healthy, right? So one would assume the oils extracted from them would be equally as healthy.


This couldn’t be any further from the truth.

When these oils are extracted, they are oxidized at high temperatures and break apart. They then release harmful free radicals (cancer causing chemicals) when consumed.

Vegetable oils contain TOXIC transfats in them, which are TERRIBLE for you!

If you are not aware of what trans-fat actually is, it’s genetically modified saturated fat designed to stay solid at room temperature.

Transfat has been linked to cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and obesity.

Except for olive oil and coconut oil (which are awesome for you), you should STAY AWAY from the rest of these so-called vegetable oils.

By the way, most of these oils that claim to be vegetable oil, aren’t even made from any actual vegetables!

Here’s a list of some of the oils you should RUN AWAY from:

  • Canola oil
  • Soybean oil
  • Safflower oil
  • Sunflower oil
  • Cottonseed oil

Next time you want to get a healthy dose of omega 6 and 3’s, I suggest using organic coconut oil!

Non-Organic Strawberries 

First off, let’s distinguish organic from non-organic products.

organic food simply means it was made without the use of pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, GMO’s, antibiotics, or hormones.

So what does this mean for the non-organic strawberries?

Well, the USDA tested 176 samples of non-organic strawberries and ALL of them had detectable pesticide levels.

Of the 176, 40% contained residue of 10 or more different types of pesticides on them.

OK, so it has pesticides. So what!

Because there is nothing healthy about consuming poison (that’s what pesticides are), you should probably avoid pesticides.

Pesticides are linked to:

  • Weakened immune system
  • Cancer
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Autism
  • Obesity
  • Diabetes

If you’re craving strawberries and need a fix, go organic!

Diet Soda

Diet soda sounds good; it has the word DIET in it, so shouldn’t it be healthy?


Diet soda contains artificial sweeteners that may inhibit the brain cells that make you think you’re full.

Because of this, you could easily over eat.

 (I’ll be going into more detail SPECIFICALLY about artificial sweeteners later)

Also, diet soda has been linked to the following:

  • Kidney damage
  • Tooth decay
  • Higher risk of stroke and heart attack
  • Bone loss

You are providing your body with ZERO nutrients.

Water is an ESSENTIAL nutrient the body needs for vital organs and basic functions (you will not survive without water). So replace the diet soda with H20


I’m not going to lie, I used to believe bread was healthy just like you. I figured since it was whole grain, whole wheat, or 9 grain, that I was on the right track.

Sorry to say, but those labels are just another marketing gimmick.

When you think of bread, think refined processed carbohydrates, because that’s all that it is.

Most of the bread sold in the supermarket are filled with high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils which are trans-fats (we talked about this earlier), and many other ingredients that most of us can’t even pronounce correctly.

Bread has a negative effect on your blood sugar levels.

When you eat a sandwich, you’re consuming on average, 42 grams of carbohydrates or should I say SUGAR.

Once the body breaks down that bread, it’s going to treat it the same as it would sugar.

Talk about MAJOR insulin spikes!

Another downside from eating bread is it causes inflammation in the body.

Most of the breads we eat have wheat in them, therefore, they have gluten in them.

Gluten is a protein found in barley, wheat, and rye. Unfortunately, most people do not digest this protein very well. Just because you don’t have celiac disease (major gluten sensitivity) does not mean that eating bread is not doing any harm to your body.

Typically, people with celiac who are exposed to gluten can have VERY unpleasant side effects. These include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Gas
  • Bloating
  • Constipation
  • Vomiting
  • Joint pain
  • Migraines
  • Muscle fatigue
  • Autoimmune disorders

While you may not be affected the same way as someone with celiac, there are other ways the gluten found in bread can be negatively affecting your body.

It can cause skin problems, muscles disorders, depression, and fibromyalgia.

My suggestion: try replacing the bread with more veggies.


White Rice Cakes

During the late 80’s and early 90’s, rice cakes were extremely popular. It was believed that replacing cookies with a rice cake that only contains 35 calories, was a much healthier alternative.


Rice cakes are EXTREMELY high on the glycemic index rating, at roughly 82 out of a 100. Not too far from pure sugar, which is 100 out of 100. Not really useful for weight loss!

This also will cause blood sugar spikes, which results in the release of insulin (the constant release of insulin, is BAD).

Another downside to rice cakes is they have ZERO nutritional value. Rice cakes contain zero fiber, zero fat, little to no vitamins, and possibly one gram of protein; not to mention, rice cakes contain arsenic!

Whether they contain “below toxic levels” or not, is more than enough of a reason for me to stay clear of this so-called health food.

Rather than eating rice cakes, stick to a healthier grain, such as cooked quinoa, or sweet potatoes (not soaked in butter and brown sugar like it’s Thanksgiving).

Artificial Sweeteners

Once again, I am GUILTY of consuming this in my earlier years.

I was once fooled, just like YOU may have been.

I believed that because sugar was the common cause of all things bad and related to diabetes, I would just replace it with ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS!

Well, I’m here to tell you that artificial sweeteners can cause diabetes too!

Artificial sweeteners are not made the same, but the MAJORITY of them are not healthy.

One particular study (about Splenda) showed us that because your body cannot tell the difference between real sugar and artificial sweeteners, your body will still release the insulin expecting to find glucose in the blood.

This can cause insulin resistance, just as sugar does.

Even if you’re not getting the same amount of carbohydrates, you’re still putting your body through the same stresses.

Aside from Artificial sweeteners causing the same exact effects as sugar, they have also been linked to causing –

  • Allergies
  • Cancer
  • Brain tumors
  • High blood pressure
  • Headaches
  • Seizures
  • Obesity

There is only ONE sweetener I approve of, and that’s Stevia. I use this ONLY for my coffee and that’s it!

Otherwise, you should be cutting out sugar and artificial sweeteners to TRULY cure your cravings for sugars and carbohydrates.
