Weight loss is 80% diet, and 20% exercise, so your main focus for weight loss should be all about what you are putting in your mouth.

Here, I am going to cover the top ten belly fat burning foods to help burn off that unwanted belly fat!

Top 10 Belly Fat Burning Foods

1. Water

I feel like this is # 1 because of how many people actually have mistaken hunger for thirst. Even though water is technically a food, people tend to replace food over water by accident. The second reason why water is an important tool for burning fat is due to its resting energy expenditure, or better known as burning calories at rest.(1) One study showed that adults who consumed cold drinking water had a 24-30% increase in their resting energy expenditure as early as 10 minutes after drinking one glass. This can last up to one hour or more! (2,3). The general take away from all of this, water is good for burning fat, not too mention it can help curb your appetite by helping you feel full.

2. Lean Meats

Lean meats contain an excellent source of lean protein. As most of you know, lean protein is great for boosting thermogenesis, which is a metabolic process where your body burns calories to produce heat. Lightly putting it, you’re boosting your metabolism.

Studies show that having a higher protein intake actually increases levels of satiety (helps you feel full) hormones GLP-1, cholecystokinin and peptide YY, and reduces levels of your hunger hormone leptin. (1,2,3)

Lean meats (lean proteins) such as fish, chicken, and lean beef also have a high thermic effect compared to carbs or fat. This means that more of the calories you consume from a lean protein source are going to be burned up and won’t be used for caloric storage. So, If I were to eat a 100-calorie piece of chicken, roughly 30% of those calories (30 calories) will be burned up immediately. Compared to fat (0-3%) and carbohydrates (5-10%), lean protein is a much more viable option for its fat burning potential. (source)

3. Broccoli

Broccoli is literally one of the best belly fat-burning foods out there. It helps flush out toxins, reduces inflammation, increases your metabolic rate, and helps boost your immunity. Broccoli contains phytochemicals that

can help enhance fat loss. This fibrous veggie is also extremely filling, which is great considering it is very low in carbohydrates and overall calories.

4. Eggs

Yet again, another great source of lean protein. We already talked enough about thermogenesis and how beneficial this for burning body fat. So, let’s focus on another plus the eggs provide, which is they are a GREAT source for getting your omega-3s. Omega-3s are extremely beneficial in aiding in weight loss due to its effect on boosting metabolism. Another plus to consuming eggs are they are low in calories, and very filling because of their high protein content. Eggs are an excellent source of food to keep the belly fat away!

5. Almonds

Almonds provide an excellent source of protein. They can also reduce your levels of LDL “bad” cholesterol, improve your lipid profile, and target visceral (belly) fat. Also, one particular study showed that snacking on almonds has been shown to reduce hunger and cravings (source).

Another interesting study found that people who consume almonds can boost the number of calories they burn at rest (source) Not to mention, many studies have shown that people who consume nuts more frequently having a lower body weight in general (1,2,3).  If there’s anything you should take away from this, know that consuming almonds is a great way to help lower your body weight and burn body fat.

6. Spicy Chili Peppers

Peppers such as green chili, red chili, and cayenne are loaded with both vitamin C and capsaicin. Capsaicin can greatly increase your metabolic rate and help burn body fat.  You can add them to your salads, morning omelet, or even grind one up and make it part of your hot or iced tea!

7. Oats/Oatmeal

Oats are low in calories and high in fiber and protein. As we discussed earlier, foods higher in protein are going to be much more beneficial for burning body fat compared to foods that are lower in protein content.

Oats contain an excellent source of beta-glucan, which is a fiber that can boost immune function and heart health. Research also shows that beta-glucan can help balance blood sugar levels, preventing spikes and crashes that may boost up your appetite (source). Consuming oatmeal is a great way to help keep your body weight regulated, and excellent for helping lose weight as well!

8. Raspberries

Raspberries are an excellent source of vitamin C, which is a great antioxidant that helps the body flush out toxins. They are loaded with dietary fiber, and relatively lower in calories compared to other fruits. This is not to say that it isn’t easy to overdo it with raspberries (fruit contains a lot of sugar and should be eaten in moderation), but can be very beneficial for weight loss if eaten correctly in the right amounts. It is recommended to consume 1-1 ½ cups of raspberries per day.

9. Spinach and Other Leafy Greens

Veggies such as kale, spinach, and collard greens are rich in vitamins, minerals, water, and fiber. They have a lower calorie content than fruit and a lot less sugar. Consuming leafy greens can prevent you from overeating, help boost your metabolism, and also help detoxify your body and colon.

Ever heard the term “juice your vegetables and eat your fruits”? The reason is because of how the sugar content is in vegetables in general. Try incorporating leafy greens like kale and spinach into vegetable juices or smoothies to amp up your fat burning!

10. Beans and Legumes

Consuming lentils has been shown to improve gut health by helping bowel function and slowing down the rate at which the stomach empties, which in turn helps digestion and prevents spikes in the blood sugar levels (source). Beans and legumes are an excellent source of vegan and vegetarian protein and can prevent you from overeating.

Although there are many more foods that can help with burning belly fat, those are the top picks in my book. Incorporate a healthy dose of each of these foods into your diet daily, and you will surely start getting your weight loss goals on track.

  1. Hi Brian, this is a great article you have here. I never thought that water could actually help you burn fat. You know I’m thinking about losing weight too. I don’t know what program I should use. What do you think about this website and their review, do you think it’s legit? https://jvh2018com.wordpress.com/2018/09/22/why-red-tea-is-better-than-green-tea/ I keep reading reviews about it but can’t make up my mind because of the price. I would love an opinion on weight loss from an expert. I just want to know if I really do need all the bells and whistles. Thanks in advance!

      Hey Chris,
Thanks for writing in. I, unfortunately, do not know too much about this program. I looked around for reviews, I didn’t find anything that would point in the direction of it being a scam. So, no buyers remorse from what I can see. That being said, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the best program for weight loss either. I don’t want to bad mouth a program I know nothing about, but I do have my own personal opinions about using a tea detox for weight loss. While I do believe a good detox is good for overall health and wellness, it’s not necessarily the approach I would take on weight loss. I’m actually launching my own weight loss program within the next week or so if you’re interested? Aside from that, the best advice I can give is read up on reviews that don’t sound overly biased, because a lot of these people are leaving good reviews about the product to make an affiliate commision. Hope this helps!
