The 5 Best Tasting Protein Powders for Weight Loss

Protein has come a long way since I got into the fitness scene. I’ll never forget buying my first chocolate protein powder, and how I quickly took that tub and threw it in the garbage! Honestly, it was so long ago, I can’t even remember the name of the brand. Let me assure you, I haven’t seen it since, so my guess is that nasty product was taken off the shelves a long time ago!

This is a good thing.

Finding an effective protein (meaning it actually helps you lose weight and build muscle) is one thing, but finding one that is effective and tastes good, this is another story! I am going to cover the 5 best tasting protein powders for losing weight. Before I do, I want to first cover WHY you need protein.

Why Protein is necessary?

Protein is one of the most important nutrients you can use for weight loss. In fact, a high protein diet boosts metabolism, reduces your appetite and plays a big role in several weight-regulating hormones (1, 2, 3).

Protein also has a much higher thermic effect (20-30% higher) compared to the other macros, fats and carbs (4). This means it aids in burning more calories.

So, by having a high protein intake, your body actually boosts your metabolism enough to increase the number of calories you burn each day by an extra 80-100 per day (5).

Ok, enough the with all the crazy facts, won’t protein make you look like Arnold Schwarzenegger?

If you’re a woman, this might be a slight concern for you.

Let me assure you, IT SHOULDN’T BE!

Didn’t you read what I wrote above? Just kidding.

Seriously though, protein alone will not make you like Lou Ferrigno. Unless you’re eating like a cow, powerlifting tires over your head, and injecting anabolic steroids (please don’t), then you have nothing to worry about!

The 5 Best Tasting Protein Powders for Weight Loss 2018

You want your protein powder to taste good, but you also want to make sure that it’s not loaded with a bunch of non-sense. I have a personal story I want to share about a friend of mine. He decided he wanted to use a mass gainer (mass gainers, in my opinion, are pointless), but didn’t want to spend the extra money on a good quality product.

The end result…

He definitely put on weight, BUT NOT THE RIGHT KIND!

This was a guy who ALWAYS had a six-pack (born with the genes of the Greek gods), but even with his amazing genetics, they weren’t strong enough to stop him from looking like he was in his 3rd trimester. I suspect that you probably don’t care about mass gainers, but you should care about a good quality product. Just because it tastes good, doesn’t mean you should use it!

End of rant!

My point is, you want to make sure it doesn’t contain garbage.

Here are some things you don’t want to see when you are looking for the best tasting protein powders…

1. Casein & Whey Protein Concentrate

These ingredients are high in lactose, which more often than not cause bloating, farting, and gastrointestinal problems for some individuals. (A good protein will have little no trace amounts of these in them).

2. Gluten

We are aware of what gluten intolerances and Celiac disease are. This is one ingredient that has ZERO business being in any protein powder. Gluten has been known for causing hormonal imbalances, skin conditions, fatigue, and headaches for people who don’t even have a gluten intolerance or autoimmune disorder.

3. Soy Protein

Almost all soy proteins are genetically-modified, loaded with pesticides, and cause a number of hormonal imbalances including thyroid problems. AVOID IT!

4. Vegetable Oils

There are few oils in general that are considered ok for human consumption. Sorry to say, but vegetable oils aren’t one of them. The ONLY oils that are considered ok to consume are coconut oil and olive oil. Although, olive oil becomes toxic if exposed to high heat temperatures (you probably won’t see that in protein anyways). Just stay away from them!

5. Fillers

These are usually added in so the companies can save money! Some examples of these would be coconut flour (not to be confused with coconut oil) and psyllium. These can cause gastrointestinal issues like constipation and bloating.

Alright, I’ve educated you quite enough!

Finally, now for the best tasting protein powders!

1. Transparent Labs best tasting protein powders

This is my number one favorite. It’s a grass-fed 100% isolate whey protein that tastes awesome. It comes in 5 different flavors, although my personal favorite is the chocolate. It’s a little more pricey, but well worth it!

Flavors: Chocolate, French Vanilla, Salted Caramel, Strawberry, Mocha

Amount Per Serving: Protein: 28g, Sugar: 1<g, Carbs 1g, Calories 120 Calories

Servings Per Container: 30

2. Dymatize Iso 100best tasting protein powders

This is a personal favorite of mine, and it tastes AMAZING! This might be a little biased because I am currently using this one right now, but It really is a great all-around product. Amazon gave Iso 100 a 4.4 out of 5, which is really good. It’s reasonably priced as well. What I love about this protein the most is the fact that it’s a hydrolyzed isolate whey protein.

What does mean?

This simply means your body will digest and absorb the amino acids (protein) relatively quicker.

Flavors: Banana, Birthday Cake, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Chocolate Coconut, Cinnamon Bun, Cookies and Cream, Fudge Brownie, Gourmet Vanilla, Natural Chocolate, Natural Vanilla, Chocolate, Orange Dreamsicle, Strawberry

Amount Per Serving: Protein 25g, Sugar <1g, Carbs 2g, Calories 110

Servings Per Container: 45

3. Gold Standardbest tasting protein powders

Another one of the best tasting protein powders. It does contain a slight amount of whey concentrate, but MAINLY whey protein isolates (90%, which is what you want). I used to consume this as a staple in my weight lifting career, I have moved on to the slightly better-quality product above (still great all around). Amazon gave Gold Standard a 4.4 out 5, which again, is excellent!

Flavors: There are so many, I’m not going to list them. Click here to check it out for yourself!

Amount Per Serving: Protein: 24g, Sugar 2g, Carbs 4g, Calories 120

Servings Per Container: 50

4XPI Myotein Isolatebest tasting protein powders

This is another great tasting protein. It doesn’t taste quite as good as some of the other protein powders out there, but still pretty good (why it’s 3rd on the list). The upside to this protein, it’s a 100 isolate, YAY! Again, meaning quicker and better digestion. Amazon gave Myotein a 4 out 5, which is considered to be pretty good.

Flavors: French Vanilla, Salted Carmel, Creamy Chocolate, Chocolate, Vanilla

Amount Per Serving: 28 g, Sugar >1g, Carbs >1g, Calories 120

Servings Per Container: 69

5. Driven Whey (Grass-Fed Whey Protein)best tasting protein powders

Yet again, another great-tasting protein powder. You are getting a MOSTLY whey isolate protein powder. It’s grass-fed, so that’s always a plus (probably why it’s more expensive). Amazon gave Driven Whey one the BEST rating, a 4.7 out of 5.0.

Flavors: Banana Pie, Caramel Latte, Chocolate Milkshake, Cinnamon Roll, Strawberry Milkshake, Vanilla Dream

Amounts Per Serving: Protein: 23g, Carbs: 5g, Sugar:5g, Calories: 130

Servings Per Container: 71
