Did you know that you can go as long 3 weeks without eating, but we can only survive about a week without water (depending on exposed temperatures and physical activity)?

So, it shouldn’t be a surprise that water can be used as a great way to detox our body. Not only will we cover some great detox water recipes, but we will also tackle the benefits water provides and how you can use it to help you lose weight quickly!

Detox Water: 7 Weight Loss Recipes

There are a lot of claims that putting your body through a “detox” is necessary and important for overall health. While I support that water on its own is a natural “detoxing” nutrient, I don’t support the claim that it is healthy to drink only water and starve yourself for days on end. In fact, you’re essentially robbing yourself of vital nutrients.

Instead, I would recommend consuming PLENTY of water as a way to help detox your body.

Enough with my personal opinions, let’s get back on track and cover some of the benefits of water and how you can use it to aid in your weight loss journey.

Benefits of Water

1. Can Treat and Prevent Headaches

Dehydration has been shown to cause headaches (depending on the person). Studies show that water can relieve headaches for individuals who are dehydrated. This may not apply though if the headaches were the result of other factors, like an all-night bender in the city.

2. Can Relieve Constipation

Constipation is, unfortunately, a common problem amongst people of all ages. One way to prevent and relieve constipation is by increasing your water intake.

Studies have shown that low water consumption is a risk for both younger and older individuals (1, 2).

3. Prevents Hangovers

As we all know, alcohol is a diuretic, so, unfortunately, this is going to force your body to urinate more. The end result, alcohol leaves you feeling dehydrated (3).

Even though there are quite a few symptoms associated with a hangover, dehydration is usually the cause of feelings like fatigue, thirst, headache, and a dry mouth.

Drinking plenty of water between drinks, and of course, a large dose of h20 before you hit the sheets is another great way to reduce the symptoms of a hangover. A natural detoxifier if you asked me.

4. Aids in Weight Loss

My personal favorite, it helps with weight loss. There are a couple of different ways that water helps with this.

Water increases feelings of satiety, or better put, it makes you feel full. Another great benefit to drinking water is it increases your metabolic rate.

What does that mean?

This means that every time you drink a glass of water, you are boosting your metabolism. By drinking water, you are increasing the number of calories you burn, which is better known as resting energy expenditure (4).

In fact, studies have shown that if you drink just half a liter of water, you can increase your metabolism as much as 24-30% for over an hour (5, 6)!

In addition to these wonderful benefits, it also said that drinking water before meals can reduce appetite. What does this end up doing you ask?

You end up eating less, while your metabolism is boosted! AMAZING

One study showed that participants who consumed water before each meal lost 44% more weight compared to the control group who didn’t consume water before their meal (7).

How much you should consume

Ok, so I know that the “common” recommendation for water consumption is eight 8 oz glasses a day. Is this how much I should actually drink?

Actually, this is a random number and varies from person to person. There are several different factors that need to be considered. Some of these factors are your gender, weight, activity level, whether your pregnant or breastfeeding, and of course the whether it’s hot or cold outside.

Regardless of these factors, a good rule of thumb is to consume AT LEAST what is commonly recommended, especially if your end goal is to lose weight.

Next time you want to grab a soda, just remember all the great weight loss benefits you’re missing out on!

Ok ok, I’m done with all the boring facts, lets finally get to the detox water recipes!
