best vegan protein powder for weight loss

I am happy to say that I personally made the choice to switch over from consuming whey protein for over a decade, to finally begin consuming plant-based protein.

I switched over partially because I was developing some signs of lactose intolerance, but mainly because I BELIEVE it is a much healthier option.

For those of you who are vegan or vegetarian, it is an ABSOLUTE necessity to consume protein supplements like the ones I’ve listed below.

It can be VERY difficult to get the correct amount of protein and amino acids when you are not consuming any meat, especially when trying to lose weight! Here is a list of the 5 best vegan protein powders for weight loss.

5. Orgain Organic Proteinbest vegan protein powder for weight loss

Not a bad product by any means, but there are some better ones out there. It’s still a great overall value and packs a punch of 21 grams of protein in it. Tastes just okay, but it also contains more sugar and carbs than most of the other plant-based proteins out there. So for a mediocre taste and added extra sugars/carbs, I put this one in last.

Protein Sources: Pea Protein, Brown Rice Protein, Chia Protein

Flavors: Chocolate Fudge, Vanilla bean, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Cookies and Cream, Iced Matcha Latte, Peanut Butter, Vanilla Almond, Unsweetened, Creamy Chocolate.

Amount Per Serving: Protein 21g, Sugar 5g, Carbohydrates 15g, Calories

Serving Per Container: 20

4.Naked Peabest plant protein powders for weight loss

Great Product for weight loss. This Protein is made only with pea protein and nothing else. No artificial sweeteners or flavors added to it. I know some people do not like the taste of pea protein alone, I thought it was fine as long as I added a little stevia. Overall, pretty good all around value (Especially The Price). I have not tried the vanilla or Chocolate yet, so maybe those have a better flavor (will be sampling soon).

Protein Sources: Pea Protein

Flavors: Vanilla, Chocolate, Unflavored

Amount Per Serving: Protein 27g, Sugar 2g, Carbohydrates 2g, Calories 120

Servings Per Container: 76

3. Garden of Life RAW Organic Proteinbest plant protein powder for weight loss

Another great product with an excellent source of protein. I was using this product for a while, my only complaint is it has a great flavor going down shortly followed by a funky aftertaste. Also, for whatever reason, the dry powder sticks to surfaces very easily (make sure to do it over a sink). Other than that, it’s a good value, has lots of protein, and also has PROBIOTICS! It’s super easy to digest easily making it one of the best protein powders for sensitive stomachs.

Protein Sources: Pea Protein, Brown Rice Protein

Flavors: Chocolate, Vanilla, Vanilla Chai, Unflavored

Amount Per Serving: Protein 22 g, Sugar 0g, Carbohydrates 2 g, Calories 110

Servings Per Container: 20

2. Vega Protein & Greensbest vegan protein powder for weight loss

Excellent product, and also one of my favorites. This protein has ALMOST everything you need in it. It falls short on Probiotics and vitamins, but the flavor is great. It’s up there with being one of the best plant-based protein powders out there.

Protein Sources: Pea Protein, Brown Rice Protein, Hemp Protein, Sacha Inchi Protein

Flavors: Chocolate, Vanilla, Coconut Almond, Natural, Tropical, Berry

Amount Per Serving: Protein 20g, Sugar 0g, Carbohydrates 3g, Calories 110

Servings Per Container: 26

1. Transparent Labs Organic Vegan

This is the best vegan protein powder for weight loss. It is an amazing product all around.

Not only is this protein 100% vegan, free of artificial flavoring and doesn’t contain any sweeteners, but it is also USDA Organic Certified. It is also one of the few plant-based proteins that contain concentrations of protein levels that high, making it one of the best protein powders for shredding. Above all else, it tastes amazing!

Protein Sources: Hemp Protein, Brown Rice Protein, Pea Protein

Flavors: Chocolate, Vanilla

Amount Per Serving: Protein 30g, Sugar 2g

Servings Per Container: 30

What to Look for When Selecting The Best Vegan Protein Powders For Weight Loss

As a health-conscious consumer, you’re probably going to want to choose a high-quality, clean protein powder that will help you get your desired protein intake with as few preservatives and unhealthy additives as possible.

So here are a few things you may want to consider when deciding on the best vegan protein powder for weight loss……

Complete Protein

Let’s get science-y for a brief moment.

Proteins are made up of amino acids, which are organic compounds that your body needs in order to build muscle (among other things).

To build new tissue, your body has to get nine essential amino acids:

  • histidine
  • isoleucine
  • leucine
  • lysine
  • methionine
  • phenylalanine
  • threonine
  • tryptophan
  • valine

Because your body can’t synthesize these proteins on its own, it is essential that you get them from your diet.

A dietary source of protein is considered complete when it contains all nine amino acids.

Vegan sources of complete protein include quinoa, tofu, chia seeds, and more.

That means that some of the most common vegan protein powders available, like those made from rice protein, pea protein, and wheat protein, aren’t actually complete protein sources.

That’s why it’s important to pick a protein powder that is made of a blend of different plants.

You’ll receive all nine essential amino acids in one place and give your body the nutrition it needs.

Nutrient Density

While your top priority is most likely the quantity of protein offered per serving, this shouldn’t be the only option you’re considering on the nutritional label.

Ideally, your protein powder would provide you with more than just protein.

It should also provide you with essential micro-nutrients that your body needs such as:

  • magnesium
  • potassium
  • calcium
  • zinc
  • iron
  • vitamin E

After all, plants are some of the healthiest foods you can possibly consume, so why not reap the benefits with the protein powder you buy?

Organic and Sustainable

If you’re health-conscious, you probably already know the benefits of choosing organic foods grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, GMOs, petroleum-based fertilizers, and sewage sludge-based fertilizers.

In particular, many soy-based proteins are grown with the use of a lot of pesticides, which may be harmful to you as well as the planet.

To keep on the safe side and limit the damage being done to the world from the products you buy, opt for an organic protein powder when you can.

Grain-Free

While this isn’t a must, it can beneficial if you’re following a paleo, low-carb, or gluten-free diet in conjunction with a plant-based (if that is the case).

There are several vegan protein powder options that can still fit into your diet, including pea protein, hemp protein, and spirulina.

High-Quality Ingredients

Last, but not least, is the importance of knowing what all ingredients are in the food and supplements you consume.

You want to ensure they are as healthy they can possibly be.

More often than not, this involves a balancing act of choosing something tasty enough to consume, while still providing a short list of ingredient names you can recognize.

The reality is that all-natural, organic, plant-based protein powders are often gritty, bitter, and weird-looking.

This is precisely why manufacturers start adding all sorts of ingredients like honey, agave, or coconut sugar.

Unfortunately, they may even include synthetic sweeteners, artificial flavors, fillers, and artificial coloring.

So when you scan your protein powder’s ingredient list, ensure your protein doesn’t contain ingredients like sucralose, coconut sugar, brown rice syrup, agave, acesulfame-potassium, or aspartame.

Natural sweeteners like stevia and other natural flavors are preferable.

Effectiveness

Of course, if you’ve experienced a lifetime of hearing that meat, eggs, and dairy are necessary for meeting your nutritional needs, you may have your doubts about vegan protein powder.

However, you will be surprised to know that they can be just as effective if not more in helping you meet your goals.

In fact, studies demonstrate that athletes with a plant-based diet perform just as well as athletes following an omnivore diet.

This is despite having diets significantly different in their macronutrient and micronutrient makeup. The bottom line….

Plant-based protein powder is just as effective as whey protein.

As long as you make smart decisions in the products you buy, keeping in mind the considerations listed above, you’ll be healthy and meet your goals just the same  – if not more – with a vegan option.

Additionally, you’ll also be making a choice that is more humane, better for the environment, and arguably better for your longevity.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, you don’t have to be a vegan to choose a plant-based protein powder.

The benefits are just as real for everyone, no matter how they choose to eat.

Anybody committed to living a healthy lifestyle can make the educated choice to pick a vegan protein powder.

So, that wraps up my top 5 recommendations for the best vegan protein powders for weight loss.
